Pig Launchers & Receivers

Pigging is an integral part of the maintenance regime for pipelines. SPEC offers pig trap systems ranging from simple standalone launchers and receivers to fully automated skid-mounted systems.

Application

Why Pipelines Are Pigged

Pigging can support liquid management, deposit removal and internal-corrosion control, according to the pipeline operating philosophy. Water accumulates at low points in the pipeline and those points become corrosion hot spots.

Beyond corrosion prevention, a proper pigging regime keeps the process facility operating at its specified design parameters. Regular pigging clears blockages and so reduces pressure drop along the line. Periodic pigging can also affect the sizing of the slug catcher, and may reduce slugging requirements and support more efficient downstream design.

System configuration

Major Equipment Within the System

System configuration varies with process duty, operating conditions and project requirements.

  • Major Barrel

Enlarged section where pigs are loaded or retrieved.

  • Quick-Opening Closure

End closure of the major barrel, for efficient loading and unloading of pigs.

  • Reducer

Transition between the major and the minor barrel.

  • Minor Barrel

Section between the pig trap valve and the reducer.

  • Kicker Line

Connects the major barrel with the bypass line, so fluid can be diverted through the barrel to launch or receive a pig.

  • Bypass Line

Connects the pipeline with the related facilities.

  • Balance Line

Fills and pressurises the barrel on both sides of the pig at the same time, so a pig ready to launch neither moves forward nor loses its seal.

Connection points

  • Kicker line: on a launcher as close as possible to the end closure; on a receiver as close as possible to the reducer
  • Balance line: branches off the kicker line to the minor barrel, as close as possible to the pig trap valve

Handling aids

  • Jib cranes: assist operators loading and unloading pigs
  • Pig trays: support the pig during loading and retrieval

The barrel runs from the pig trap valve up to and including the end closure. Barrel sizes, pressure rating and degree of automation are set against your pipeline and operating philosophy. Final equipment arrangement and delivery format depend on process duty, transport constraints and site requirements.

Range

From Standalone to Fully Automated

Standalone traps

Simple launcher and receiver units where the operation is manual.

Skid-mounted systems

Trap, valves, lines and instrumentation assembled on a common skid.

Fully automated

Automated sequencing of the launch and receive operation.
